
Bernadette (Detta) L. Roberts, a 33 year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, was promoted to the rank of Commander by Sheriff Lee Baca in April of 2005. She was assigned to the Correctional Services Division where she oversees Correctional Transportation Services, the Inmate Reception Center, and the Department of Mental Health activities within the Custody facilities.
Commander Roberts joined the Department in 1974 and held various assignments including Pitchess Detention Center (then, Wayside Honor Rancho) Minimum Security Facility, Crescenta Valley Station, and Sheriff’s Information Bureau. Upon being promoted to Sergeant in 1990, Commander Roberts worked at Firestone Station and Risk Management Bureau. Her promotion to Lieutenant in 1996 took her to assignments at the North County Correctional Facility, Carson Station, and as the Field Operations Region II COPS Coordinator. In 2000 Commander Roberts was promoted to Captain and worked assignments at the Pitchess Detention Center, South and East Facilities, and most recently, the Reserve Forces Bureau.
Commander Roberts holds an Associate of Arts Degree in Business Technology from Eastern Michigan University and graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy in 1998 and is a California Committee Member for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).
Commander Roberts resides in Glendale with her husband, Jerry, who is a retired Sergeant from the Sheriff’s Department. Her daughter, Dawson, 31, is a makeup artist. In her spare time, Commander Roberts enjoys golf, physical fitness, traveling and spending time with her eight year old granddaughter, Hannah, and three year old twin grandsons, Stone and Nautis. When asked to comment on her career, Commander Roberts stated, “We have all strived to support the goals and mission of the Department. I have made the commitment to the Department’s ideals and philosophy to ensure our future and see that our STAR does not diminish.”
