MICHAEL J. ROTHANS PROMOTED TO CAPTAIN

Michael J. Rothans, a 22-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, was promoted to the rank of Captain by Sheriff Lee Baca on February 26, 2006, and assigned to command Pico Rivera Sheriff’s Station. Captain Rothans’ career with the Sheriff’s Department began in 1984, when he attended the Department’s Training Academy as a member of Class #223. After graduating, he held assignments at Men’s Central Jail, Sybil Brand Institute for Women, and Lennox Station. In 1990, Captain Rothans was promoted to Detective and transferred to the Department’s Narcotics Bureau, where he held assignments at the East Los Angeles and Norwalk Sheriff’s Stations, on a Los Angeles County Street Task Force targeting street sales of narcotics, a Major Violators Crew targeting large scale narcotic traffickers, and a Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force focusing enforcement efforts on intrastate and interstate narcotic trafficking in the United States. Captain Rothans was promoted to Sergeant in 1998 and worked at Lakewood Station. In 2000, Captain Rothans was assigned to the Security Planning Group for the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, working with the United States Secret Service and the Los Angeles Police Department developing the security plan for the convention. Upon conclusion of the convention, he was transferred to the Office of the Sheriff, where he worked as Sheriff Baca’s Executive Aide. In 2001, Captain Rothans was promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to Lakewood Station. In 2003, he was transferred to the Department’s Emergency Operations Bureau as the Counter Terrorism Lieutenant assigned to the County’s Terrorism Early Warning Group. In 2004, Captain Rothans was transferred to Pico Rivera Station, where he worked as the Operations Lieutenant and was second in command of the station. Captain Rothans resides in Orange County with his wife, Lisa, and their teenage daughter and son. Captain Rothans has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Loyola Marymount University. In his spare time he enjoys golfing and traveling, and is currently the Chairman for the Los Angeles Area Council Exploring Program.
